Lossiemouth suffered defeat to Keith on the opening day of the 2014-15 Press and Journal Highland League season, but the Coasters were left scratching their heads as to how they came away with nothing after a dominant performance.
Lossie started the game without Chris Ross who was still recovering from the head knock suffered against Fort William in the sides previous outing. Keith fielded local lad Michael Ewen for the first time in a competitive game following his arrival from Formartine United in the summer.
The game started with a competitive edge and Shawn Scott was lucky to escape a booking for an enthusiastic tackle on a Maroon, despite the protestations of the numerous visiting blazers. Keith stole into the lead with half an hour played. A swift counter attack from the visitors caught Lossie cold and Matthew McDonald played in Stuart MASSIE to convert from close range.
Lossie kept Keith at arms length until the closing moments of the half, only to be undone by a long ball over the top. A hoof downfield found Michael EWEN who made no mistake from inside the area to double his sides lead.
Half time – Lossiemouth 0-2 Keith
Soon after the restart Lossie were back in the game. Shawn Scott found space out wide and pinged an accurate cross onto the foot of Kevin DUGUID who scored his first goal for the club.
Lossie continued to press their guests, and Scott and Duguid caused Keith all kinds of problems, with the latter firing an overhead effort towards goal only to see it palmed away by Day.
The closing stages saw more drama as Keith were first reduced to ten men before sealing the win with a third goal. Bruce Milne was ordered off for gesticulating to a Lossie official, but the reduction in numbers didn’t stop the Maroons from having the final say. Michael EWEN bounded through the defence and rattled off a shot which beat Watson on it’s way to striking the post, but the former Formartine man made sure at the second attempt to finish the game off.
Lossie head south for their next game, where they’ll face Rothes at Mackessack Park on Wednesday. Both sides know a win is vital as both clubs attempt to finish top of the bottom four.
