Lossie
finally ended a long losing streak by winning a Scottish Cup tie for the
first time in over fifty years, beating Newton Stewart to end the hoodoo.
Goals from Sean McIntosh, Martin McMullan and a double from Shawn Scott
saw off the South of Scotland side to put the Coasters into the draw for
round two. Newton
Stewart made the long journey north to find Lossie had accumulated what
looked like their biggest squad of the season. Shawn Scott and John
Urquhart were free from suspension, Martin McMullan and Scott Matheson
returned from offshore, and Jamie Bagley and Kevin Stuart continued their
pursuit of fitness following long injury lay-offs. Newton Stewart went
into the game in the same kind of form as Lossie, so both clubs were
looking to get off to a good start to put to bed any pre-match nerves. To
the delight of the home crowd, it was Lossie who opened the scoring after
only 8 minutes. A Lossie corner went into the box and Sean MCINTOSH
tucked the ball away through a ruck of players, before sprinting away to
celebrate. Newton
Stewart were stung by the opener and struggled to get into the game.
Lossie were playing well, as they had done against Keith and Nairn, only
this time were in the lead. Both sides had half chances to score, but
defences remained tight. Tony Ross cleared off the line a scuffed shot
from Sean Taylor, before the best chance fell to the visitors on 20
minutes, when William Cloy tested Darren McConnachie with a free kick,
forcing the keeper into a save. The
hosts went two ahead on the half hour. A shot from Sean McIntosh forced
Newton keeper Harry Fiddler into a low save but, despite the presence of
four defenders in the area, the ball broke to Shawn SCOTT and he
made no mistake in placing the ball high into the net from a few yards. Half time – Lossiemouth 2 Newton Stewart 0 The
sight of Chick Young patrolling the touchline entertained the crowd at
half time, the reporter in the area for a sportsmans dinner and covering
the Lossie game beforehand, but it was the third goal that the home fans
were happiest to see. Nine minutes into the send half, Martin MCMULLAN
took possession in the middle of the park, headed for goal and lashed the
ball home from the edge of the penalty box, leaving Fiddler with no
chance. The
visitors desperately needed a goal to get back into the game and set up an
interesting last half hour when they pulled one back. Stewart TAYLOR
finally found a way past McConnachie in the Lossie goals with a placed
chip to narrow the scoreline. The
goal saw Lossie ring the changes, with Michael Smith replacing Tony Ross
and Sean McIntosh subbed for Nikki Smith, who scored against Nairn after
coming off the bench. Shawn
Scott was itching to put the game out of sight, and tried an ambitious
overhead effort, only to fire the ball over the bar. The former Highland
League Player of the Year got his second with five minutes of the game
left. Clean through on goal, SCOTT waited for the Newton keeper to
go to ground before shooting right footed over the keepers legs for his
second of the afternoon. Full time – Lossiemouth 4 Newton Stewart 1 |
