Lossiemouth v Albion Rovers @ Grant Park, Lossiemouth

24-Oct-2009 Lossiemouth v Albion Rovers - Active Nation Scottish Cup Second Round

Lossie's dreams of progressing to the third round of the Scottish Cup were smashed, after being defeated by Third Division side Albion Rovers. Despite strong play from the home side, Albion managed to net early and late goals to secure the win.

Home fans had high hopes for their club after their defeat of Newton Stewart in the first round only 4 weeks ago - The first time Lossie had collected a Scottish Cup in for more than fifty years. Albion fans were also optimistic, despite their side being knocked out of the running for the Cup last season in only the third round. Goals by Barr and Walker for the away side ensured that they advanced at least as far this season.

Things looked ominous for Lossie early on with Albion netting a goal within the first five minutes. A penalty was awarded to the away side for a foul against one of their players from within the box, but the home fans were angered at this decision from the referee. Albion's Robert BARR took the spot kick, which he sent soaring past the right hand side of the Lossie keeper, Craig Masterton, and into the back the net.

This gave the Cliftonhill side the solid footing in the game they had hoped for and Albion continued to dominate possession for the next 15 minutes, and it was clear that they had the upper hand over their Lossie rivals.

Despite the many opportunities at scoring the side created, they failed to add to their tally but there was little inclination that the Coasters were about to level during the first forty five.

The second half kicked off very much as the first half had ended, with Albion dominating possession and creating most chances for themselves. On 51 minutes, a foul by Lossie's JJ Urquhart just outside the box gave the away side a free kick in a dangerous area but Robert Barr struck the wall with his effort.

On 56 minutes, Albion fans were again given something to get excited about when Lossie keeper Craig Masterton went to ground, allowing the away side an almost open goal but the defence rallied round to clear.

Another free kick at the edge of the box gave Christopher Boyle the chance to stake his claim to be in charge of set pieces, but he duly sent the ball soaring wide of the goalmouth to the delight of the home support.

Some set pieces did offer Lossie the chance to deliver the ball into dangerous areas with JJ Urquhart firing the ball into the box but the home defence showed little sign of nerves and dealt with the deliveries.

The tie remained in the balance until, on 88 minutes Patrick WALKER made a sprint upfield and placed the ball past the left hand side of an exposed Lossie keeper, securing his side's place in the third round of the Cup.
