Clachnacuddin v Lossiemouth @ Grant Street Park, Inverness

24-Mar-2010 Clachnacuddin v Lossiemouth - Scot-Ads Highland League

Lossie made a dangerous midweek raid into darkest Merkinch and came away with nothing thanks to two injury time goals from their perennially skint hosts. Clach opened the scoring in the first half and the game was level heading into the dying minutes thanks to an equaliser from substitute Shawn Scott, only for Clach to steal all three points.

Lossie started the game with Darren McConnachie back in goals while Shawn Scott and Dan Smith were on the bench. Clach had former Lossie manager Jim Walker on the touchline assisting Ian Polworth; on the park, the much vaunted Gordon Morrison was in the starting line-up. Councillor Dougie Ross left his car park unattended for a couple of hours to officiate, and managed to irritate the life out of both supporters and management of both clubs.

The home side went ahead midway through the half, amid howls of protest from Lossie. An attack from the visitors broke down and as Clach broke out of defence, Kevin Flett was fouled no more than a dozen yards from the stand side linesman while in the process of trying to put the ball out for a throw. Play raged on and as Lossie struggled to catch up, Andrew MACASKILL had room outside the penalty area to shoot high into the top corner of the net over McConnachie. A fine finish, but Lossie were far from happy with the build up.

The goal visibly knocked the wind out of Lossie, and Clach strengthened their grip on the game by retaining possession for spells and keeping Lossie on the back foot. Gordon Morrison was offered the opportunity to double his sides lead with a set piece but his deflected effort found its way through to McConnachie.

Lossie held firm, and as the half drew to a close the visitors were pressing to get back into the game but could not level, the closest to an equaliser coming from a Strathdee shot that went wide.

Half time - Clachnacuddin 1 Lossiemouth 0

The interval was marked by a smell of smoke wafting down the touchline, creating a mild sense of panic amongst those who had cars parked nearby. The sounds of occasional police sirens as the second half began did nothing to put at ease those expecting to hear their registration number called out over the tannoy, although the noise went some way to drowning out the monotonous drone of Polworth.

The second half saw some occasional football, with both sides now more comfortable on the rock solid surface, but for every minute of action there was an incident of shirt pulling or a tangle of bodies as the sides nibbled at each other, or a roar of complaint from either dugout as the referee continued to get in the way.

Lossie were on level terms with a little over quarter of an hour to go. Shawn SCOTT took possession just inside the Clach half, brushed off a challenge from ginger John MacAskill, and hurtled downfield before stroking the ball under Kinnaird and into the goal at the base of the post.

A draw looked the likely result as the game wore on, but Clach were to snatch the points in dramatic fashion, scoring once again with the assistance of the referee. A period of Clach pressure saw the hosts camped in the Lossie area as time ran out but despite a clear shove on JJ Urquhart in the area, play continued and Stuart LESLIE toe-poked the ball home from inside the six yard box.

Clach added insult to injury moments later with a third. Lossie conceded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area and, having had earlier opportunities from a similar distance to get his aim right, man of the moment Gordon MORRISON stepped up to curl the ball home past the outstretched arm of McConnachie. As goals go, this was worthy of a higher level, and Morrison will surely get the chance to step up to a club more suited to his talents in the near future.

Councillor Ross was given one last chance to impose himself on the game. A melee near the Lossie dugout saw Biscuits dropped to the ground and Michael Finnis take a kick or two at the Lossie player’s mid-section, making no attempt to play the ball in the process. As expected, the referee bottled the decision, only booking Finnis before blowing for time.
