Lossiemouth v Formartine United @ Grant Park, Lossiemouth

20-Mar-2010 Lossiemouth v Formartine United - Fosters Highland League Cup Second Round

Lossiemouth swept into the quarter finals of the Fosters Highland League Cup with a stirring performance against Formartine United. A tense affair from the start, Stuart Strathdee and Stuart McKay traded second half goals before Shawn Scott hammered home the winner in the final minute.

Nikki Smith was ruled out due to work commitments, so Shawn Scott was in the starting line-up following his midweek goal against Deveronvale, while Craig Masterton deputised in goals. Formartine were missing Mark Simpson but fielded enough quality to give them hope of repeating the 5-0 hiding they gave Lossie two weeks previously.

Lossie started sluggishly, offering too much time and space to the visitors. Masterton was tested early, first of all by Somers, stretching to push the strikers shot round the post, before stopping a Richie Singer effort. When Masterton wasn't keeping the hosts in the game, Kevin Stuart was on hand to keep Formartine at bay, tackling Stuart McKay only yards from the face of goal before he could shoot.

Lossie finally got into gear, with Shawn Scott and Stuart Strathdee causing all manner of problems. Scott had Lossies first effort on goal, firing wide from outside the area, before the two combined to leave the visitors stretched at the back. Scott played a ball across the face of goal for Strathdee but the ball arrived just behind the latter, and Sievewright scrambled it clear from close range.

Soon after, Biscuits went close again, heading the ball over Gray and onto the roof of the net, before a lobbed effort went the same way.

The game edged towards the interval with neither side looking like taking their chances. The only remaining incident of note was a thuggish challenge by Richie Singer on Shawn Scott. The newly arrived refugee from Inverurie went in far too high on Biscuits, whose attempts to display to referee Roddy Cobb the stud marks on the inside of his thigh were ignored. Cobb ensured at least one name went into the book over the incident, as he yellow-carded JJ Urquhart of Lossie for having the cheek to complain about the tackle.

Half time - Lossiemouth 0 Formartine United 0

Lossie started the half with a couple of long range efforts which tested Gray. Lossie were noticeably growing in confidence, and were giving their monied guests a strong challenge.

The game moved up a notch just after the hour as Lossie went ahead. A speedy counter attack saw Biscuits hurtle down the wing before playing a beautiful square ball across the box, and Stuart STRATHDEE thrashed it high into the net without breaking stride.

Amid a rash of unpunished fouls by Formartine and a number of petty bookings by Cobb, Formartine pushed for a leveller. Singer played a cross to the back post for Somers to hit back across goal, only for Sim to clear on the line. Masterton preserved the lead momentarily, saving from Coull, but the game was all square soon after. A goalmouth scramble saw Stuart MCKAY given three chances to bundle the ball over the line, and he made no mistake with the third. Richie Singer endeared himself further to the home support with a moment of celebration aimed at the crowd.

Lossie were looking ragged and were almost behind minutes later. Marc Young had the ball in the net but the goal was disallowed for a handball. Formartine hit the post as the game wound down, but Lossie held firm.

The game looked like it was heading for extra time and possibly penalties when a dramatic winner saved everyone another half hour of Roddy Cobb. To the delight of the home support, it was Lossie who scored. Formartine once again failed to deal with a long ball over the top, and Shawn SCOTT won the game with a chip over Gray from the edge of the area, giving Lossie a just reward for the afternoons performance.

The goal sparked scenes of wild celebration from Lossie, ending with a full squad of players piled on top of Biscuits beside the corner flag. How Richie Singer celebrated that goal, no-one noticed and, frankly, no one cared.
