Lossiemouth v Buckie Thistle @ Grant Park, Lossiemouth

03-Apr-2010 Lossiemouth v Buckie Thistle - Fosters Highland League Cup Quarter Final

Buckie Thistle were skinned, gutted and battered in this Highland League cup installment of the Fisher Derby as Lossie roared back from two goals down to sink their neighbours. Goals from Donnie Munro and Stephen Bruce gave the visitors an early lead, but Lossie came back to lead 4-2 thanks to two goals from Shawn Scott, a wonder strike from Stuart Strathdee and an excellent solo effort from Tony Ross. Charlie Brown set up a nervy finish with a late penalty but Lossie saw out the game for a famous win.

Lossie started the game with Gary Macdonald in midfield while Dan Smith and Nikki Smith were benched. Gregg Carroll surprised everyone by dropping Martin Charlesworth from the squad entirely, while Zander Sutherland and Charlie Brown had to make do with a seat on the bench.

Several recent strong performances had given the Coasters room for optimism, but Lossie found themselves up against it almost from kick-off. Early pressure caused a sense of panic in the Lossie defence and Buckie took the lead from a corner after only three minutes. Darren McConnachie palmed a ball to the back post into play and Donnie MUNRO reacted quickly to rifle home.

There was no let up in the pressure as the half progressed and it was rewarded twenty minutes in when the Jags doubled their lead. Paul Napier sent in a deep cross and Lossie failed to deal with it, allowing Stephen BRUCE to head home. The Lossie bench reacted with fury at the sight of this goal, knowing full well Lossie had more to them than they were showing and demanded the hosts stop acting so generously towards their guests.

The rollicking worked and within ten minutes Lossie were level. A free kick out wide was whipped into the box by John Urquhart, and Shawn SCOTT was first to the ball to score against his former club. The Buckie fans didn’t like that, and they certainly didn’t like it when Lossie drew level a minute later. A loose ball in midfield bounced kindly in front of Stuart STRATHDEE and the striker put the laces through it from all of thirty yards, sending the ball soaring past a stationary Strong.

Buckie stopped the rot and as the game inched towards the interval it looked like the sides would go in all square, but a dramatic injury time moment ensured Lossie went in ahead. A long ball over the top saw Buckie keeper Strong race from his goal to clear only to lose the race to a flying Shawn SCOTT. The former Highland League Player of the Year took the ball of the toe of Strong before running through on goal and hammering the ball into the net.

Lossie continued to surf their tsunami of swagger into the second half and an ice cool finish from Tony Ross saw Lossie go further ahead before the hour. A long clearance from McConnachie bounced over the Buckie defence and ROSS took one touch before drilling the ball across the face of goal past Strong and in at the far post. The Lossie fans took their turn to celebrate while the Jags support stood in stunned silence, unable to believe what was unfolding in front of them.

Buckie were on the ropes and Lossies pacey youngsters were running riot against a creaking Jags side. The visiting support were taking their frustrations out on their team, with keeper Strong taking the brunt of the abuse much to the dismay of Gregg Carroll. As Lossie kept Buckie pinned in their half, the frustration boiled over amongst the Buckie players, with the defence loudly arguing with each other. Lewis MacKinnon, already booked, decided the best way to stop Biscuits was to body check him, and was lucky to stay on the park after a meaty challenge.

Buckie finally got a foothold in the game and created chances to score, the best falling to Charlie Brown who shanked the ball over the bar from inside the six yard box.

The Jags got a third goal in the last minute to set up a nervous spell of injury time for Lossie. A debatable handball in the box saw Buckie awarded a penalty, and Charlie BROWN stepped up to convert.

Lossie went on to retain possession until the final whistle, and the win ensures a semi-final tie against Forres Mechanics later in the month. Buckie can now concentrate on the pursuit of their first league title in 50-odd years, but they are going to have to up their game to get their hands on the flag.
