Lossiemouth v Fraserburgh @ Grant Park, Lossiemouth

31-Jan--2009 Lossiemouth v Fraserburgh - Scot-Ads Highland League

Lossie continued their fine unbeaten home run against Fraserburgh with a hard-fought draw at Grant Park. The Brochers have not won in Lossie since October 2004, and for the fourth season in a row, the sides had to settle for a point each following a 1-1 draw.

Lossie retained the services of Joe Lasley and Martin McMullen for the game, and drafted in Dan Smith to occupy the bench. The Fraserburgh line-up featured former Skiter Russell McBride, who scored an own goal at Bellslea when the sides met in October.

Whatever plans Lossie had for the afternoon were altered early on thanks to an injury to Joe Lasley, who was replaced by youngster Dan Smith. Previously at Milnes High and currently on loan to RAF Lossiemouth, Smith is one for the future and probably didn’t expect to be thrown in at the deep end against a sturdy Broch side and a howling wind.

Shawn Scott also appeared to pick up a knock but made an effort to run it off. In doing so, the former Highland League Player of the Year managed to open the scoring. A careless pass from Mark Dickson gave Lossie the opportunity to break from midfield, and Martin McMullen played in SCOTT to finish from just inside the box with his right foot.

Darren McConnachie got himself on the scoresheet when the sides met earlier in the season, but had no time for goalscoring as Fraserburgh pushed for an equaliser. Continual pressure from the visitors culminated in a Graham Johnston volley that forced McConnachie into a flying save, and Mini was called upon shortly after to push wide a header from Willie West.

The teams ventured out for the second half with the wind picking up and blowing in favour of the Broch. The conditions were to play into the hands of the visitors, keeping Lossie within their own half of the pitch for long spells.

Fraserburgh went close early in the second half through Steven Main, who curled the ball wide of goal, before equalising just after the hour. Mark Dickson made amends for his error in the build up to the opener by lashing a shot McConnachie could only parry, and in the process set up Allan HALE for an easy sidefoot finish.

Fraserburgh had Lossie penned back but were struggling to find a way through. Craig Donaldson was in fine form for the home side, meeting almost every long ball and cross with a powerful header. The Broch become ever more desperate for a winner, with Graham Johnston receiving a booking for diving in an attempt to win a spot-kick.

As the game wore on, tired legs on both sides allowed Lossie more freedom in the middle of the park, with a limping Martin McMullen urging his side up the park.

In the end, the weather proved to be winner, with neither side managing a second goal. February presents a run of relatively favourable games for Lossie, starting with a trip to Wick this weekend.
