The Jags revival continued with
a 2-0 victory over Lossiemouth as they took full advantage of a spell of
dominance in the second half to see off a Coasters side that passed the
ball around well at times.
Lossie were the first to have a go at goals, with Graeme Wilson's well struck effort from range flying over the crossbar then at the other end Jamie Shewan's header from a Paul Napier cross zipped just inches past the post. Sean McIntosh showed a great turn of pace which took him clear of Bob Duncan and racing into the penalty area and the young striker was unfortunate to see his low cross-goal shot from the corner of the six yard box bounce just wide of the Kevin Main's far post That chance was replicated at the other end when Paul Napier got in down the inside left channel, his low effort was slowed by the hands of Darren McConnachie and it took the toe of Kevin Stuart to boot the ball clear as a scrum of bodies charged towards the ball with menace. The best of the chances were falling the way of Napier during the first half. From the edge of the box he cut onto his right foot and fired a shot two feet wide of McConnachie right hand post then just before the break he profited from Kevin Stuart's slip but with the defence in hot pursuit he choose to try a quick lob which was comfortably taken by the Lossie goalie. Half time – Lossiemouth 0 Buckie Thistle 0 Gregg Carrol made a double substitution at half time, introducing Andy Matheson and Neil Davidson alongside Donnie Munro in the middle of the park. Mark Hamilton and Brian Neill went off with Jamie Shewan moving to the right wing back role. It was to be a move that supplied the impetus required to go on and win the game but not before they survived a scare early in the second half. Sean McIntosh cleverly created the opening for Scotty Matheson but Kevin Main was swift off his line and Matheson's effort was blocked by the keeper. However Buckie took the game by the scruff of the neck and Andy Matheson's 30 yarder saw Darren McConnachie moving quickly to tip the ball over the bar. A series of corners ensued and although there were some melees the Lossie defence held on. The breakthrough was to come from the penalty spot. Martin Charlesworth fed Jamie Shewan who had broke into the box from his wing back berth and although from the stand it looked like a swing and a miss at the ball let to the fall, having taken it past Kevin Stuart, referee Bryan Braidwood was just a few yards away from the ball and he decreed that the centre back's outstretched leg has played an illegal role and he duly pointed confidently to the penalty spot. Having scored from 12 yards last week to round off his hat trick Martin CHARLESWORTH was equally as confident, rolling it calmly to the keeper's right as the goalie went left. Charlesworth then had a header from a Mike Macdonald cross well saved before the Jags made it 2-0 on the hour mark. Paul Napier dropped back and played a lovely curling pass in behind the Lossie back line, putting it just beyond the reach of Craig Donaldson and perfectly into the path of Neil DAVIDSON and he ran on to net with a composed 12 yard pass into the corner of the net. At this point Buckie's tails were up and it looked as though they mat add more, Paul Napier should have got his name on the scoresheet after an ill advised backheel from Kev Stuart set up the striker but once again Darren McConnachie won that battle then Donnie Munro missed from 5 yards out, having got on the end of a low Napier cross to the back stick. Lossie weathered the storm and could well have set up a dramatic final fifteen minutes when Martin McMullen was sent clear down the right wing and he squared the ball to the unmarked Scott Matheson 8 yards out but, once again, Kev Main leapt out to make a fantastic block. Matheson should have scored but credit goes again to the keeper. It was to be the defining moment of the last 15 minutes as the match began to draw to a close. Despite the flurry of snow early in the game it had been a typical winters match watched by a healthy if frozen toed crowd. Full time – Lossiemouth 0 Buckie Thistle 2 |
