Lossie strolled to victory in
the Highland League Fans Tournament VI Toilet Bowl with a succession of
impressive displays in the knock-out stages. The Coasters negotiated a
tricky group stage and entered the bottom section following a last game
defeat to Lossie United, there was no stopping the men in red as they put
Keith (Richards), Muir of Ord and Forres (Delaney) to the sword, before
disposing of Fort William in the final.
A healthy complement of 23 teams entered the sixth edition of the popular event, held in Lossie for the fourth year running, and the weather was once again kind to the participants, with early cloud cover replaced by warm sunshine for the entire afternoon. Lossie opened Group B with a game against Huntly (Shanks) and early nerves let the visitors in for an early lead. The home side eventually found their feet and levelled through Graeme WILSON, and were handed the chance to bag all three points when they were awarded a last minute penalty. Unfortunately Graeme Wilson saw his spot kick pushed wide, and both sides had to make do with a draw. Next up were Fort William, sporting a burgundy and mustard coloured kit. Lossie evidently assumed this Fort William side were of a relative quality to that of the HFL outfit, turned in a lazy performance, and were proved very wrong as they were skelped 3-1, Dougie COULL grabbing the consolation. Forres (Taylor), sensibly choosing to wear a kit with not a brown or yellow hoop in sight, were the next opponents and caught Lossie off guard, winning by a single goal. The hosts finally got their tournament going with a healthy win over Rattray Reserves, a team featuring Lossie legend Sean McIntosh. Despite McIntosh opening the scoring with a fine right footed strike, Lossie fought back to win 3-1 with goals from Dougie COULL, Graeme WILSON and Kevan MCINTOSH. Lossies final group game paired them with local foes Lossie United, with a win for either likely to secure a berth in the draw for the Super Quaich. The junior side came out on top with a narrow 1-0 win, Shaun Scott earning local bragging rights with a ferocious free kick late on in the game. The final group table saw Lossie entered into the Toilet Bowl, while Lossie United ventured forward into the Super Quaich. Second Round opponents were Keith (Richards), whose decision to wear Rangers kits for the day backfired as the Lossie team upped a gear at the idea of being beaten by such an outfit, and romped to a 3-0 win. The quarter final stage paired Lossie with Muir of Ord, a side from Inverness led by former Lossie goalkeeper Michael Rae. Lossie had their own HFL experience, however, and were able to squeak past The Goalie by the narrowest of scorelines. Standing between Lossie and a place in the final were Forres (Delaney), a side beaten by Lossie the previous year in controversial - nay, hilarious - circumstances, and it looked like Forres were to have their revenge as they took an early lead. Lossie were not in the mood to pass up a shot at glory on home turf, and came from behind to win 2-1 to progress to the final. In the semi-final of the Super Quaich, Lossie United had the chance to ensure representation from the host in both finals, but were eliminated on penalties by Rothes Oranj, to the delight of the Speysiders inebriated management. Lossie were to face Fort William in the final, the same side who had demolished Lossie in the group stage in what had been Lossies worst performance of the day so far. Fort were looking tired after their semi-final draw and victorious penalty shoot out over Rattray Reserves, and Lossies experience took its toll early on with Dougie COULL bagging a double to get things moving. Dougie MALCOLM netted a third to seal victory for the 2005 runners up, before the winners returned to the bar to collect and consume their prizes. |
