30-Jun-2007 Highland League Fans Tournament V

The Highland League Fans Tournament circus rolled into Lossie for the third consecutive year as 15 teams battled it out for the various trophies (and beer!) on offer. The hosts were looking to improve on the previous season where they were knocked out by Huntly in the Toilet Bowl Quarter Finals.

First up were a team representing MFR. Dressed in black and white strips, Lossie pretended they were Elgin and quickly put them to the sword, the Coasters running out 3-1 winners.

Following that solid win, Lossie faced late arrivals Rothes. Team Oranj were a late entry for this event and it showed, but Lossie made hard work of things before finally squeaking past by a single goal.

Next up was a team of Reporters, organised by tournament supremo Steven Rattray and captained by Steven Priest. Their reporting skills better be good as they've no future as players; Lossie strolled to a 3-0 victory and began to dream of silverware.

The last game of the group stages was a tame affair against fellow Lossie side Moray United. With Lossie already through to the top knock-out section, the squad was rotated without any problems, and the sides played out a goalless draw.

As a result of the successful group stage, Lossie were entered into the Super Quaich section knock out stages, where eight teams would squabble over the right to be called champions. Lossie were handed a rocky path to the final, with Forres in the last eight ahead of Buckie or ICT in the last four.

The quarter-final v Forres Delaney was always going to be a controversial affair, with both captains avoiding drama by remaining on the bench for the opening stages. Lossie wasted no time in taking the lead, and in some style. Dougie Malcolm sprinted half the length of the pitch around at least three players before sliding the ball home at the tightest of angles to open the scoring. The hosts could have gone two ahead when an infringement in the Forres area saw Lossie awarded a penalty, only for it to be wasted by Kevan McIntosh. Forres were handed a chance to equalise in the dying seconds, again from the penalty spot, but their taker made an even bigger Horlicks of it, shanking the ball high over the bar, and Lossie progressed.

Into the semi-final and a tough test in the shape of seven whippets from Buckie. A weary Lossie were no match for these youngsters and were sunk 3-0 without much fuss, and the Coasters retired to the bar for soup and lager.

In the Super Quaich final, Buckie High FP's were soundly beaten by Milnes High, by a scoreline of 3-0. Rothes were the victors in the Toilet Bowl, and Steven Priest picked up the wooden spoon on behalf of his Reporters side.
