Lossiemouth v Wick Academy @ Grant Park, Lossiemouth

12-Apr-2008 Lossiemouth v Wick Academy - Scot-Ads Highland League

Last season this fixture was decided by a moment of magic from young striker Shane Sutherland who was subsequently to sign for Inverness Caley Thistle in the summer.  This time around and although the pitch was not nearly as fiery the outcome was a goalless draw as that touch of class in front of goals was not demonstrated in such a manner.

The first five minutes saw Wick dominate proceedings and the Scorries had a shot whipped off the line by Darren McConnachie in the first minute as they pressed for an early opener.

It took 19 minutes for the home team to record their first effort at Don McMillan's goals with Graeme Wilson's ambitions 30 yard effort flying wide of the mark.  At the other end Gary Farquhar attempted to repeat his opening day set piece wizardry but Darren McConnachie got down to parry the ball wide of the mark just inside the base of his post as the former St Johnstone man prepared to celebrate.

Lossie had the ball in the net just before the half hour when David Blackhall turned it past Don McMillan following a 30 yard run and feed from Calum Read but the linesman's flag called play back. The game began to open up from this point on.

In the 33rd minute Sean McIntosh made his way to the bye-line but his deep cross evaded all in the area and was collected by Graeme Wilson.  He reloaded but it was Wick who were the pinball wizards making the clearance.

The Scorries broke up the park with Richard Macadie showing his pace, sprinting clear from the halfway line but from 18 yards out he screwed his shot wide of the mark.

The last real chance of the half saw Sean McIntosh played through on goal by sub Craig Donaldson, however the Urquhart based front man struck a weak shot at the keeper having sprung the offside trap.

Lossie had a couple of early chances at the start of the second half; firstly Mark Wood firing a shot into the keeper arms then a teasing Calum Read cross was well claimed by Don MacMillan. Wicks first effort of second half Martin Gunn shot from centre circle but the ball ended up closer to corner flag than goal

The home team had a real chance to open the scoring on the hour when Mark Wood intercepted a Wick pass 20 yards out but he choose to shoot weakly at the keeper rather than playing it square for either Graeme Wilson or Sean McIntosh, both of whom were well placed.

Darren McConnachie made some excellent saves, from Martin Gunn and then from Gary Weir, to keep the home side in the game and then with ten minutes to go the Coasters produced a great escape when a surging Alan Sinclair run and neat pass past Darren McConnachie was cleared off the line by Graeme Wilson.

With two minutes remaining both teams had one last chance to win it.  Wick's Gary Manson sprung the offside trap and raced through but Darren McConnachie was to pull off an amazing stop, somehow flicking the ball over the bar for a corner.

The corner came in, was cleared and Lossie set off on a counter lead by Kyle Stewart.  The teenager made it all the way to the edge of the box before squaring to Graeme Wilson who in turn fed George Russell but the veteran somehow screwed his shot wide to keep the stalemate intact.
