Cove Rangers clinched the Scot
Ads Scottish Highland Football League Championship with a solid 3-0 win
over Lossiemouth at Rainbow Taxis Park on the south side of Aberdeen this
afternoon.
Lossie had the first chance in what had been a quiet opening when Graeme Wilson pounced on a loose back header from to get in behind home defence and poke high towards goal to let Cove know that they were to be in for a battle However the home side took the lead within a minute when Paul Coutts back in the side after injury sent a perfect cross to the back post for Phil McKibben to head across goal to Jamie WATT who headed home from 4 yards out for his 29th goal of the season. It could have been 2-0 a couple of minutes later when once again Coutts played the ball in from right for Jamie Watt who was just off target with his back heel. Lossie were trying to get the ball on the deck and play the ball around but it was still Cove attacking down right and in 34 minutes a Neil Cruikshank cross into middle was flicked away from danger The coasters came close again 7 minutes from half time Graeme Wilson's high effort was well saved by Windrum. Then just after the break they had a lucky escape on 47 minutes when Eric Watson cleared off his line from substitute Mark Wood with John Urquhart also threatening. With the second goal being crucial it almost came in 50 minutes when a long kick out by Lee Windrum was chased by Jamie Watt getting behind the defence but he just couldn't get the touch on the ball to control it when right in on the visiting keeper. The second killer goal came in 61 minutes, Paul Coutts with the free kick and Eric WATSON with the powerful header with McConnachie only able to help it into the corner of the net, it was Watson's twelfth goal of the season - eleven with his head. With the league won the icing on the cake came with seven minutes to go, Paul Coutts with the cross and Jamie WATT netting his second from close range although sub Robbie Henderson only on the park for four minutes may well have added a fourth right on full time. The celebrations began in earnest as the final whistle sounded as this free scoring Cove team had officially upset all the pre season odds to deservedly claim their second SHFL title with the irony being that their first came hard on the heels of a Maroons title win as well, seven years ago.
