Inverurie Locos v
Lossiemouth @ Harlaw Park, Inverurie
| 01-Mar-2008 | Inverurie Locos v Lossiemouth - Fosters Highland League Cup First Round |
|
|
With their impressive victory
over Buckie Thistle last week blowing the title race wide open, it was the
turn of Lossiemouth to face Inverurie at Harlaw Park, where the home side
set aside the pressures of the league title race and concentrate on the
Highland League Cup.
With high winds affecting the early stages, bobbles on the pitch and mis placed passes were rife, however after an uninspiring twenty minutes played Richie Singer had no excuses as he somehow placed the ball wide of a completely open goal. Under pressure from a long ball from midfield, Duncan Lamont's backwards header fell straight to the feet of Singer, who after rounding the keeper attempted to finish the move off with style, however his delicate shot across goal was completely misjudged to the jeers of the vocal away fans. With twenty five minutes played Locos looked determined to make up for the miss with a Scott Buchan long ball finding an open Neil Gauld at the back post, but agonisingly for the fans the ball again ran across goal and wide. Three minutes later it seemed as if the game was to remain goalless, with a Scott Buchan free kick on the edge of the box curling over the Lossie wall and beating keeper Craig Masterton before striking his far post. However on the stroke of half time the Locos finally converted one of their many chances of the half through defender Steven PARK. The move started from a bust up between Mark Wood and Craig Ross on the half way line, both players cautioned, the resulting free kick from Scott Buchan swung deep into the box for Steven Park to receive the ball at his feet, before striking the ball across goal, this time into the back of the net. Half time – Inverurie Locos 1 Lossiemouth 0 After the break it seemed as though a frustrating forty five minutes of football was ahead as after a quiet ten minutes, Gary Tweedie created a rare opportunity for Lossiemouth when he drove the ball across goal from the left side of the pitch, however it was watched all the way by Paul Jarvie. With the gusty weather still creating problems, chances were infrequent, with Locos reduced to a couple of long shots from Singer and Neil McLean. However as the home side looked to kill the match, Lossie's threat on the counter attack was very apparent with Steven Park and Mark Simpson defending brilliantly to keep out any opportunities. As the game began to come to a close Locos place in the next round still looked under threat as it took a brilliant reaction save from Paul Jarvie to maintain a clean sheet as he managed to push the ball over the crossbar with his knees from a low driven shot from Sean McIntosh. Eventually Lossiemouths fortune ran out as Neil GAULD claimed a crucial late goal for the second time in seven days. An innocuous long ball from Neil McLean from his own box was defended poorly by the away defence allowing an unmarked Gauld to pick the ball up, round Craig Masterton and unlike Singer before, placed the ball straight into the net to secure Locos place in the next round. However Locos celebrations were dampened minutes later when Neil McLean received a red card for an off the ball incident seconds before full time, allegedly for remarks made to enclosure side linesman Brian Dean Full time – Inverurie Locos 2 Lossiemouth 0 |
