Lossiemouth v Fraserburgh @ Grant Park, Lossiemouth

28-Oct-2006 Lossiemouth v Fraserburgh - Scot-Ads Highland League

They left it late in getting it, but Lossiemouth got the draw they deserved this weekend when Craig Morrison stroked home a 95th minute penalty to even things up against Fraserburgh at Grant Park. The visitors had lead through a William West goal scored just after an hour, but Morrison showed nerves of steel to rescue a point as time expired.

The weather in the area had taken its toll on the home of football earlier in the week, with torrential rain soaking the Jewel of Moray and howling wind saw the perimeter wall taking a battering but as kick-off approached blue skies appeared over Grant Park and pleasant conditions for football were the order of the day.

The game started as expected, with both teams breaking the other down outside of shooting range, meaning little chances for scoring and plenty of battling in midfield. Lossie managed to field the same team as in their previous game, which brought an air of familiarity to the side.

Fraserburgh were first to threaten when veteran Michael Stephen, chasing his clubs goal-scoring record, turned a corner wide of the near post after ten minutes.

As the half progressed Fraserburgh began to dominate proceedings, with Lossie content to defend and break. Steven Main fired a low shot wide of the post after a knock down from a Michael Stephen corner, and Neil McLaren fired a free kick over the bar.

Darren McConnachie was once again earning his money, and produced a fine save in palming a Neil Main shot around the post. Other than that, the game was played almost exclusively in the middle third of the park, with Fraserburgh looking surprised at being asked to have to work for the points.

Lossie should have gone ahead through Kyle Stewart just short of the interval, but after good work and an excellent square ball across the face of goal from Kevin Stuart, the youngster scuffed his shot and Neil Main cleared. From the resulting corner, Steven Rattray sliced a shot over the bar and out of the ground.

Fraserburgh started the second period the stronger, with William West causing plenty of trouble. McConnachie had to be down swiftly to hold a shot from the youngster minutes into the half, and Neil McLaren came close to opening the scoring when his shot from a dozen yards struck the bar.

McConnachie was keeping Lossie in the game at times, and on the hour he frustrated Fraserburgh yet again, deflecting a Michael Stephen volley onto the bar with an outstanding piece of goalkeeping.

After trying their luck from all angles, and finding Lossie in no mood to concede a spectacular effort, Fraserburgh resorted to the simple game and took the lead with a header from a corner. Michael Stephen swung in a cross and William WEST rose to nod home and open the scoring.

Lossie tried to get back into the game immediately, but the Broch continued pressing and should have had things sewn up long before full time.

With injury time ticking away Lossie were still pushing for an equaliser, and it looked like a narrow defeat was to be the sum of the Coasters efforts after Kevin Stuart was harshly given offside when clean through on goal.

With one last attack, Lossie pushed forward and Steven Rattray found his path to goal hampered by the double team of Ryan Christie and Neil Main and despite the protests of the visiting players, Morag Pirie awarded Lossie a penalty. A long delay before the kick saw Morrison and Ellis debate who was getting to take it, with Ellis the favourite after his spot-kick in similar circumstances against Locos last season. However, the ground fell silent as MORRISON stepped up to slot home a late, late equaliser that bounced over the line as Geddes fell the wrong way.

Lossie now head for Harlaw Park where Inverurie Locos lie in wait. The Railwaymen will be hurting after being thoroughly embarrassed by Rothes this weekend in a 5-1 defeat at Mackessack Park. Lossie will not fear the trip to Aberdeenshire, with almost an entirely new team from last season ready to record the clubs first win at Harlaw.
