Wick Academy v Lossiemouth @ Harmsworth Park, Lossiemouth

25-Nov-2006 Wick Academy v Lossiemouth - Scot-Ads Highland League

Lossie sank to a new low this weekend with a disastrous 3-1 reverse against a strong Wick Academy side at Harmsworth Park. Craig Shearer grabbed a second half double to add to a Shane Sutherland opener in the first period. Gavin Middleton scored a late consolation for Lossie with a free-kick, aided by the disgrace of a pitch the teams had been told to play on.

The Scorries, playing down the slope, had Lossie on the back foot from the start and in the third minute Gary Weir recorded their first effort at goal with a header under pressure from Kevin Stuart. The visitors were next go close when Middleton played Morrison through the middle, but More in the Wick goals was out quickly to block the shot.

Both keepers excelled to keep the score level with Flynn making a fine block high to his left before, at the other end, a Gavin Middleton corner was met by Marc Whyte however James More pulled off a miraculous one handed stop before the ball was eventually forced past the post.

A concerted piece of passing play from Wick culminated in the opener in the 31st minute. Shane SUTHERLAND finally collected the ball 9 yards out and he turned his man and drilled a low shot past Graham Flynn to give the homesters a half time lead.

Lossie finished the half trying to level, and after a clever knockdown from Kyle Stewart, Marc Whyte had the opportunity to strike at goal but blazed his shot over the bar.

Shane Sutherland had an excellent opportunity to move the Scorries two ahead early in the second period but he shot wide when well placed. Graham Flynn made a fine flying save as Wick produced the best of the openings in a period of battling football.

A ball to the back post picked out Gary Weir and he nodded it back across the face of the goal where the unmarked Craig SHEARER was on hand to knock it home from two yards out, killing the game as a contest.

Shearer was to get a fortunate second late on when a free kick was spilled by the unfortunate Graham Flynn. Shane Sutherland was on hand to lay the ball square to Craig SHEARER who sidefooted home from close range.

If Shearer was lucky it was nothing compared to the moment of fortunate that turned a well taken free kick from Gavin MIDDLETON into a goal. Middleton had been only a foot away from netting with an earlier free kick which flew over the bar but this one took a crazy bounce right in front of the keeper and, with the pace already on the ball, flew high into the net. A consolation goal but it could easily have been two when Middleton again floated a free kick only for Wormald to head just wide from a few yards.

Hellish times to be a Lossie supporter and the fixture list does us know favours, with a trip to Buckie Thistle coming next week. Watching from behind your hands could be the best option.
