Brora Rangers v Lossiemouth @ Dudgeon Park, Brora

23-Sep-2006 Brora Rangers v Lossiemouth - Scot-Ads Highland League

The misery continues for at least another week as Lossie suffered defeat at Brora Rangers by the worst means possible – a last minute goal. The home side had taken the lead through Ricky Wardop only for Craig Morrison to equalise with his first goal of the season, but a late, LATE strike from Shane Sutherland ensured the points stayed at Dudgeon Park and Lossie went home empty handed.

A beautiful day greeted the sides as they strolled out onto a healthy looking surface for one of the games likely to decide the final positions towards the bottom of the league, but the football failed by a long way to live up to the weather, with little happening.

Darren McConnachie in goals for Lossie was the first player called into action when forced to make a low save after Wardrop played a fine ball across the box, and Stuart Cameron was on hand to clear. Wardrop was causing all kinds of problems, and had Mini scrambling to make a fine one handed save moments later, tipping a long range effort over the bar. Sam Mackay lashed the knockdown from the resultant corner high over the bar.

Lossie were slow to come out from the back, with two new faces in midfield passing the ball about. It was the regulars creating the chances, however, and Watson and Middleton fired a number of cross into the box aimed at Morrison, but striker couldn’t get his timing right.

Kyle Stewart also threatened, but his curling shot from 20 yards flew wide of the post, and the youngster was involved soon after in setting up Steven Rattray, who fired a shot in on target and into the keepers arms, and that proved to be the last action of the half.

The teams emerged for the second half both looking to take full points from the game, and the home side went ahead soon after the interval. With a Lossie attack breaking down, several players found themselves too far up the field, and a quick Brora attack saw David Chapman race clear before squaring to Ricky WARDROP, who bundled the ball over the line from close range.

Lossie immediately retaliated, and McMullan steamed through the midfield before laying the ball off to the right where Morrison composed himself and unleashed a shot at goal, stinging the palms of the keeper at his near post.

Brora almost doubled their lead minutes later as a lapse by Dixon allowed Wardrop a run on goal, but Mini, as ever, was equal to the shot and blocked well.

The closest Lossie came in the game was a Morrison shot cleared off the line, and it looked like the homesters were going to get their way, until with only seven minutes remaining Kyle Stewart curled a cross into the box and Craig MORRISON was there to control the ball, turn and rifle home from ten yards. The striker celebrated his first goal of the season with the traditional shirt-removing routine and was promptly booked.

The visitors almost stole it late on when McMullan beat his man on the wing and drilled a low cross towards Lee Moir in the box, but the second half sub saw the ball cleared off his toe by John Smith. Brora were next to go for glory and Dixon had to be sharp to clear from the goalline a shot by Gary Cornishe.

And then, in the fourth minute of injury time, just when you thought Lossie were going to get away with it – they didn’t. John Colquhoun swung a corner in to the box, and the lack of a solid clearance saw it fall to Shane SUTHERLAND who shut his eyes and fired it through everyones legs and in. The referee rubbed it in further by demanding the players assemble for Lossie to take centre only to blow for time before the ball left the centre circle.

Heartbreaking. Even by our own standards.
