The Highland League Fans Tournament circus rolled into Lossie for the second consecutive year as 15 teams battled it out for the various trophies (and beer!) on offer. The hosts were looking to go one stage further than the previous year where they were defeated on penalties by Nairn County in the Toilet Bowl final. First up were Elgin City (Burr), a squad featuring several former HFL and Junior stars including ex-Lossiemouth players Ross McHardy and Boo. The Coasters got off to a slow start and quickly found themselves down by a couple of goals before sorting themselves out. The Elgin team scored another before Dougie Coull struck to give the scoreline a shadow of respectability, but it was too little too late. Lossie then faced Clachnacudden, who took advantage of another slow start to go two goals up. Lossie rallied and were looking to score only to run out of time. The third game was against the Doric Destroyers, a team comprising supporters from Deveronvale and Fraserburgh. Lossie were stunned by an early strike, shinned in from the halfway line, but responded by pounding the East Coasters for the remainder of the game. A way through the defence was not forthcoming however, and the Destroyers took advantage late on to double their lead. Lossies final group game was against Buckie Thistle (McPherson), a talent packed outfit from along the coast who had little trouble dispatching a Lossie side who were beginning to wilt in the sun. Kevan McIntosh scored late on but the hosts were three down at that point. Such form earned Lossie the right to play the other Lossiemouth team in a battle for the wooden spoon, as both teams cruised through their groups without stopping to pick up any points. Bert Mieles side offered little in the way of a test last year as they succumbed 3-0. This year was more of a struggle, and it took a long punt from Klouse in goal being nodded in by Dougie Coull to secure a berth in the quarter finals. Huntly, regular foes in this competition, stood in the way of Lossie and a semi-final place, and the Brown and Yellows were sporting a surprise package in the shape of Darren Shalliker. The Big Man (although not as big as he used to be!) duly inspired his team to victory with a pair of goals, but could do nothing to help at the rear as Huntly were overrun completely by a Lossie side who did everything but equalise. Kevan McIntosh did throw the Coasters a line of hope but a second goal failed to materialise. All teams returned to the Social Club following the tournament for soup, sandwiches and Sven, and the World Cup Quart-Final between Portugal and England, where tournament organiser Steven Rattray dispensed the prizes and beer to those old enough to collect. Ross County ran out winners of the Toilet Bowl, beating Clach on penalties, and Buckie Thistle (McPherson) were winners of the top section, securing the Super Quaich for the first time. |
