Lossiemouth FC - Match Reports
Fraserburgh v Lossiemouth @ Bellslea Park, Fraserburgh

24-Dec-2005 Fraserburgh v Lossiemouth - Scot-Ads Highland League

Lossie produced the shock result of the season so far this weekend, with a comprehensive victory over Fraserburgh at Bellslea Park. Goals from Martin McMullan, Craig Morrison, Dougie Coull and Jordan Main ensured a 4-2 victory in a game the Coasters never looked like losing.

With Lossie suffering an injury crisis, Tommy Madden recruited three players from local junior side Lossiemouth Utd to bolster the ranks. Darren Watson and Dougie Coull started their first ever Highland League games, with Gordon Riddoch making a welcome return to the side.

Only five minutes had elapsed before Coull showed he had what it takes to make an impact, heading just wide from a corner. The debutant had the ball in the net shortly after, but his effort was in vain as the linesman flagged for offside, despite the ball going in off a defender.

Michael Stephen was next to go close and found himself clean through on Steve Dunn, but the Highland League Player of The Year failed to show his usual accuracy in front of goal and fired straight at the keeper.

Twenty-three minutes and Lossie took the lead. William West under hit a back pass to Billy Gordon in goals, and Craig Morrison raced in to take advantage. The ball deflected off the goalkeeper, only to fall at the feet of Martin MCMULLAN, who made no mistake.

Fraserburgh were creating chance after chance to score, but were displaying none of their usual sharpness in front of goal. Their best chance came after half an hour, when Michael Stephen drilled a low ball across the face of goal, only for Derek Milne to sky it over the bar from a couple of yards out. A Few minutes later, Ryan Christie nodded a corner goal bound, but could only watch as the ball cracked off the centre of the crossbar.

Five minutes before half time, the visitors doubled their lead. An accurate pass out to Morrison on the wing saw him beat Cowie and bear down on Gordon in goal, and from twenty yards Lossies top scorer could only drive the ball against the keeper. Fortunately for MORRISON, the ball rebounded nicely, and he drilled it low and hard under Gordon to double Lossies advantage.

Before the interval arrived, Steve Dunn produced the save of the game so far, stopping a Gavin Weymss header from point blank range before McMullan cleared. Ellis found time to test Gordon in the Broch goal from 18 yards, but the elderly keeper was equal to the shot, and the home side held on until the break.

Half time - Fraserburgh 0 Lossiemouth 2

Martin McMullan came out for the second half and immediately caused Fraserburgh problems, starting with a long-range shot that went just wide of the post. Minutes later, it took a last ditch tackle from William West on the very edge of the box to prevent McMullan from shooting. Lossie finished their early dominant spell when a McMullan cross swung into the box and just missed the outstretched leg of Morrison at the back post.

Fraserburgh needed a goal quickly, and got one midway through the second half. Derek Milne and Kevin Norris passed the ball around the Lossie defence before it broke to MILNE, who scuffed it in from close range. It wasn’t pretty, but it hauled the Broch back into the game, albeit temporarily.

Less than a minute later, Lossie extended their advantage once again. Milne, who had just hauled his side back into contention, was at fault, being dispossessed on the edge of his own box by Dougie COULL, who rammed a left footed strike home for the Coasters third.

Amazingly, from kick-off, Fraserburgh again pulled a goal back through Graham JOHNSTONE, who side footed home from 12 yards after some careless defending.

The scoring was complete a minute later, when Jordan MAIN took advantage of some less than clinical defending from Johnstone to fire home from 12 yards.

Fraserburgh were still pushing for a third goal until late on, but when David Hendry produced a diving headed clearance from the goal-line to deny the home side a third, the game was over for the Broch, who have taken only one point from a possible six against Lossiemouth this season, and must consider themselves outsiders for the title, given that their rivals have all run riot over the Coasters in recent weeks.

And so the year ends on a high for Lossie, who produced a performance the likes of which hasn’t been seen in many a year, particularly at Bellslea. With Rothes up next, and trips to Fort William and Wick Academy all in January, the next few weeks represents a real chance for Lossie to put some points on the board and start to restore some respectability after the nightmare that was (most of) December.
