Lossiemouth v Wick Academy @ Grant Park, Lossiemouth

19-Nov-2005 Lossiemouth v Wick Academy - Scot-Ads Highland League

This weekends Scot-Ads Highland League clash between Lossiemouth and Wick Academy provided more than enough entertainment to keep both sets of fans happy throughout a cold afternoon at Grant Park, but failed to provide a winner as both sides shared six goals and the points.

Wick have often done well on trips to Lossie and got off to a flying start, scoring the opening goal inside seven minutes. Mark Nichol threaded a ball through to Nigel MACKENZIE who beat Reid for pace and fired the ball past Dunn from a half dozen yards out. Not the ideal start for a Lossie side who knew defeat today would leave them with a lot of catching up to do in terms of league points.

The home side drew level almost immediately, however, and it was Craig Morrison who set it up. His well crafted pass over the defence found Martin MCMULLEN who chipped Don MacMillan in goals to level the game.

The goal provided a kick up the rear for Lossie who had started slowly and allowed Wick plenty of possession, and the home fans were cheering again shortly after as Lossie went ahead shortly after. A fine cross from Steven Ellis found Graeme KENNEDY at the back post, who nodded home to register his first league goal of the season to loud cheers.

Wick immediately set about finding an equaliser, and would have had one were it not for Reids goal line clearance after some chaotic defending. The visitors were passing the ball around comfortably and for spells had Lossie struggling to keep up. Lossie were still creating the odd chance, and Morrison was unlucky not to extend the home sides lead after beating two men in the box and shooting, but the ball dipped over the bar.

Lossie had the crossbar to thank for keeping their lead intact as the half drew to a close. Former St Johnstone man Gary Farquhar let fly from a full 30 yards out but his bullet shot could only rattle the bar as Steve Dunn looked on.

Wick set about the second half in determined fashion and had Lossie on the back foot immediately, with Smith having to make a last gasp challenge on Mackenzie as he shaped to shoot from the edge of the box.

The visitors found themselves on level terms twelve minutes in to the second half. Shaun Sinclair launched a free kick into the box, with the ball evading any sign of a defence until it was met by Andrew MACLEOD who tucked it under Dunn.

Morrison almost had Lossie back in front straight away but after controlling the ball perfectly with his chest, his volley from the corner of the box flew just over the bar.

It was to prove a costly miss minutes later when Wick went 3-2 up. Farquhar fired a quick free kick downfield which caught the Lossie defence napping, allowing Mark NICHOL to run on and score the fifth goal of the game.

Lossie were now running out of time and created a number of chances to equalise, the best of which was a Morrison firing a free kick which dipped just over the bar. The game was becoming stretched, with Wick continuing to effortlessly move the ball around the park, while Lossie showed they had a bit of craft about them through Morrison and Lasley, but the home side did not have the

With only eight minutes remaining, Lossie got an equaliser. A goal kick from Dunn bounced through the defence untouched, and Joe LASLEY gratefully took control and fired it home to level the scores again. Lossie managed to get the ball in the net shortly after through Morrison, but the enclosure side linesman was of the opinion that Mo was offside and had the flag up quickly. For the goal to stand would have been harsh on Wick, but from the enclosure there appeared to be nothing wrong with it.

With only minutes to go, Wick were reduced to ten men when Martin Gunn was booked for the second time and ordered from the park. Lossie could have stolen all three points bang on full time after a goalmouth scramble saw a Kennedy header just fail to cross the line, and Wick held on for a draw.
