Lossie made the trip east this weekend to face Huntly at Christie Park, home of one the clubs finest hours, a 2-1 win over Fraserburgh in the Tennents Highland League Cup Final. Unfortunately, the Coasters have less success against the permanent residents, having only triumphed there once in the past decade.

Bright sunshine and perfect conditions for football greeted the teams, but only Huntly appeared in the mood for playing any. The opening minutes saw the home side immediately take charge and begin to press a Lossie side looking a little off the pace. Only nine minutes had passed when Huntly took the lead. Youngson clipped a marauding Gary McGowan inside the box, and the referee pointed to the spot. Ross CAMPBELL sent Dunn the wrong way, and Huntly were off and running.

The early phase of the game got worse for Lossie when Shaun Scott was tackled hard and limped off injured, and was replaced by young Gordon Riddoch after quarter of an hour. The youngster went on to perform well, and may feature at Buckie this coming weekend.

As the half wore on, Lossie settled in and began to look a little more composed, but having to chase the game was eventually going to cost them. It almost did midway through the half, but O’Driscoll put the ball wide of a grateful Dunn. At the other end, Riddoch had one of the few chances for the visitors, but despite doing well to beat his man on the edge of the box could only shoot at Bowman in goal.

Just when it looked like Lossie might keep it close going into the interval, Huntly made it two through Russell GUILD, who fired home a crisp volley from six yards after good work from veteran Martin Stewart. The game as a contest for points was finished four minutes before half time, when a Lossie free kick on the edge of the Huntly area was cleared to Stewart on the halfway line, who in turn played an excellent cross field pass to O’DRISCOLL, who wasted no time in racing toward Dunn and beating him at his near post.

Lossie, for a change, started the second half with a bit of enterprise, and within a minute Moir tested Bowman with a long range shot, but the keeper did well to hold on. At the rear, Lossie were still all at sea, and only five minutes had elapsed when Huntly made it four through GUILD, who was at the back stick to nod in a deceiving cross by a hairy-looking Levi Stephen.

Forde and Riddoch were still causing problems on occasion, and it was Forde who almost caused an upset, taking on a wandering Bowman on the edge of his box. The keeper was obviously eager to join his teammates downfield, and just manages to launch the ball downfield before he was caught.

Lossies best move of the game came with fifteen minutes to go, when Moir stormed down the wing, using Hendry and Riddoch to open up space, before laying off a pass to an open Ellis, who, sadly for the travelling support, could only shoot over.

Huntly produced a fifth goal with only a few minutes left through Neil REID, who did well to tuck the ball past Dunn at his near post.

And that was that. A disappointing performance, but Huntly showed they may be worth the title of champions with some clinical finishing and, when required, organised defending. For Lossie, the end of the season can’t come fast enough, but with trips to Buckie and Inverurie still to go, the finale must still look a long way away.
