Lossiemouth 3 Cove Rangers 2

Lossie propelled themselves into fifth position in the Scot-Ads Highland League table with a 3-2 win over Scottish Cup qualifiers Cove Rangers. Two goals from Shaun Scott and one from Darren Shalliker secured victory.

The game started slowly, with most of the action taking place in the middle third of the park. Cove had the first real chance of the game when Robertson put a header over the bar when it looked easier to score. Lossie were slowly coming into the game, taking advantage of Coves deep defending. Caufield and McMullan were allowed space to run at Cove, and Scott and Shally were looking sharp.

Lossie took the lead after 30 minutes with a goal from SCOTT. After twice keeping the ball despite the close attention of the Cove midfield, Hendry found Ellis open in the centre, whos pass found Biscuits in enough space to shoot beneath Thain in the Cove goal.

Caufield was still impressive in midfield, and his good link-up work with Scott and Shalliker saw him allowed a free shot from the edge of the box. Unfortunately, he could only place it into the arms of Thain.

Minutes before the break Lossie doubled their advantage with a goal from SHALLIKER. McMullan took the ball for a run down the left, beating two men before stroking a pass into the Shally, who turned his man and fired home.

HALF TIME – Lossiemouth 2 Cove Rangers 0

Cove started the second half with more enthusiasm than they had shown in the first, and Lossie took their time to get going again. In the second minute of the half, Dunn was forced into a flying save due to some slack defending. The opening 15 minutes of the half was all Cove, with Lossie unable to get back into the game. Cove got the goal they had been threatening to score after 64 minutes, when STEEL found himself unmarked in the six-yard box, heading home a free kick from Brown. Having conceded such a soft goal, Lossie were now looking uncomfortable at the back.

No sooner had Cove got themselves back in it than they were down to ten men, with their no. 2 sent off for a wild challenge on Dave Hendry. Lossie took advantage, and were rewarded by what some described as the goal of the season from SCOTT, who lashed home a shot from all of 25 yards, with the ball going in off the base of the post.

However, a moment of indecision in the Lossie rearguard cost the home side a second goal. With only three minutes left, STEEL pounced on Sims delay to shoot past Dunn to set up a tense finale. Lossie held on for an excellent 3 points which leaves them unbeaten at home in the league this season.
