Fraserburgh v Lossiemouth
Scot-Ads Highland League
Report and pictures by Jimmy Shaker
Fraserburgh took full advantage of the windy conditions and some poor defending from Lossiemouth to ensure they stayed ahead of the chasing pack at the top of the Highland League.
The game started in extremely windy conditions, with Fraserburgh having the advantage. The bumpy, sand covered pitch did nothing to ease the situation, although the wind ensured the ball spent precious little time on the ground. Both teams struggled initially, but Lossiemouth were first to go close, when Shalliker saw a header cleared from the goal line, and his partner in crime Scott put the rebound wide.
From a football point of view, the wind was having the better of it, but it allowed Fraserburgh to take the lead after 26 minutes. A long goal kick from Thomson landed at the feet of Ian MURRAY who took the ball round Dunn and fired home.
Five minutes before the break and Fraserburgh were two up. Regular goal scorer Michael Stephen, who confused the Lossie rearguard by playing wide left, found himself in plenty of space on the wing and picked out COWIE in the box, who scored from 8 yards. From kick-off, Lossie headed up field, but McMullan could only force a shot over the bar.
Lossie had so far
failed to get to grips with the wind, but the support were left hoping it was
going to cause the home side as many problems and allow the visitors a chance to
get back into the game.
Half time - Fraserburgh 2 Lossiemouth 0
Only three minutes of the second half had elapsed and Fraserburgh should have wrapped things up. Again, Michael Stephen found himself in acres of space on the wing, and his accurate pass to Murray was on its way in until Dunn pulled off an excellent save to keep his side in the game. At the other end, Lossie were still finding the occasional opportunity in front of goal, and Shallikers free kick went just wide.
On the hour mark the game was all over, as Fraserburgh went three up through WEMYSS. A cross into the box had Dunn in a flap, and as it went over his head, the ball was nodded in. Almost immediately afterwards, Fraserburgh conspired to have a shot cleared off the line and hit the post in the space of a minute, but this time the Lossiemouth goal held firm.
The Broch made it four after 65 minutes through COWIE, who tapped home after Dunn could only parry a Stephen shot, and the fifth and final insult came with only six minutes remaining, when MCLAREN converted a Michael Stephen cross.
