Nairn County 5 Lossiemouth 1
Lossiemouth started life post-Tatters with an away tie to a Nairn side enjoying a mixed start to the season. With the club chairman Kevin Williams picking the side, Lossie were looking to avoid a defeat which would render the second game against Ross County meaningless.
Lossie started in fine fashion with SCOTT sending the away side into an early lead in 6 minutes with an accurate shot under Calder in the Nairn goal. This early lead was followed by more Lossie pressure, mainly from the front two Scott and Shalliker, who both forced the keeper into saves.
Nairn got their equaliser after 21 minutes through BROOKS at the far post, who slid in a Johnny Seaton cross.
Lossie came close to returning to pole position soon after, but Shalliker could only shoot wide after good work with Scott. McMullan then hit the post for Lossie, only to see his teammate Ellis fire the rebound wide of the target.
Nairn took the lead shortly before the half, when Lossie old boy Seaton sent KELLACHER away down the right. He stepped inside and fired the ball past Dunn towards the far post, off which the ball bounced in.
HALF TIME – Nairn County 2 Lossiemouth 1
Lossiemouth started the second half at pace, knowing that defeat would send them out of the cup which produced many happy memories in recent years, and in the second minute of the half Ellis shot wide after a good pass from Scott. Minutes later, Shalliker sent Scott clean through the middle of the park with a precise pass, but the youngster could only shoot against Calders outstretched foot. Lossie continued to look dangerous, with shots from McMullan forcing Calder to work for a living, and Shalliker sent a free kick just over.
However, Nairn finished the game with their third goal, which came from MACRAE after a blocked shot from Kellacher. MacRae looked to be in an offside position, but took advantage of some indecision at the rear to effectively wrap things up with 20 minutes to go.
The final ten minutes held more drama, but little in the favour of Lossie. Nairn increased their advantage with a goal from KELLACHER who fired home a shot from the edge of the box after another throw-in had sneaked its way through the Lossie defence.
Nairn made it 5-1 with four minutes to go through BARRON who turned a cross back across goal and over the head of Dunn.
Lossie fans were already on their way towards the exits when Nairn were awarded a last minute penalty; they would have the last laugh, however, as Kellacher put the ball over the bar and out of the ground, narrowly missing the last train to Aberdeen.
Lossie can be encouraged by this performance. Although heavily beaten, there was room for optimism for long spells, and, with a bit of work at the back, Saturdays game against Cove Rangers might yet yield a point for the Coasters.
