Lossiemouth v Nairn County

Lossie took to Grant Park for the last time this season to face Nairn County, a team the Coasters haven’t beaten in a couple of seasons. They’ll have to try again next season, as they were beaten again, but only by a last minute goal from David Macrae.

The game was played at a slow pace, with both sides looking to take it easy. Nairn looked better going forward, while Lossie, stricken of any kind of regular forward, had to hope Nairn didn’t take the lead too early.

Lossies only shot of note came from Vigurs, who tested Calder for the first time with a good drive, which saw the elderly keeper do well to put around the post.

Five minutes before the break, and Nairn should have taken the lead. The opportunity to lob a stranded Dunn wasn’t taken, and the game continued goalless.

Bizarrely, the closing stages of the half were studied closely by a helicopter of a military nature, which did a dozen laps of Grant Park. It quickly decided enough was enough and disappeared towards Buckie, unaware the Jags were out of town.

Half time - Lossiemouth 0 Nairn County 0

Nairn looked a little sharper in the second half, and had a Brooks shot cleared off the line early on. Lossie were lacking in shape and failing to clear their lines, and as a result were under siege for long spells. Nairn couldn’t find the opener however, and had Calder to thank for keeping the game goalless when he tipped a Vigurs shot around the post. Daniel Forde also could have scored after an error by Calder on the edge of the box presented him with a chance, but he put the ball wide.

Lossie should have had a penalty with twenty minutes to go, but the referee, despite being in an excellent position, chose to ignore a handball in the box.

Just when it looked like Lossie were about to draw a game for the first time this season, Nairn stole the points in the final minute. Steve Dunn couldn’t hold onto a Willie Barron shot, and David MACRAE popped up to nod the ball over the line.

There was still time for a sending off, and Shaun Noble received his second yellow card for a late challenge. His afternoon was made complete when the referee showed him a second red for remarks made, and that was that.

Lossie now face trips to Brora this Saturday and Fort William the following Wednesday, and with Scott and Shalliker back, there should be points available before the remaining games at Huntly, Buckie and Inverurie.
