Inverurie Locos 8 Lossiemouth 1

Lossie were given a right royal hiding by Inverurie in their final game of the season. 8 goals, 6 of which came in the second half, meant Steven Ellis’ late penalty wasn’t enough to give Lossie the share of the spoils they earned in last seasons game at Harlaw Park.

It took the Locos only nine minutes to get things rolling, with Ritchie SINGER sending a fine volley past Michael Rae from the edge of the box. The Lossie support wondered if today was going to see their side get the beating they should have received the previous week at Buckie, but Locos were kept to one goal until just before half time. Lossie pushed up field, literally, and Scott Buchan had to be alert to clear a Steven Ellis header from the goal line.

The visitors were stroking the ball around well and Lossie were chasing the game, but the visitors, like last week, restricted their opponents to shots from distance, the closest of which came from Buchan, but Dunn, replacing Rae after half an hour, did well to save.

Locos went two up just before half time through Kenny COULL, who put the ball through the legs of Dunn. Holding Locos to just a one goal lead at half time would have been cause for optimism, but at 2-0 down, Lossie had a mountain to climb. Unfortunately, it was to become bigger almost by the minute in the second half.

Half time – Inverurie Locos 2  Lossiemouth 0

Two minutes into the second half and Locos were home and dry, when Scott TAYLOR fired past Dunn from six yards. The game was done, but the scoring had barely begun. Three became four when Stuart MCKAY backheeled the ball past Dunn. Within sixty seconds it was 5-0, again MCKAY was the marksman, who gleefully received a ball from Scott Taylor in open space before hitting the target.

There was drama in the 59th minute, when, Locos conspired to put the ball wide of the target. Regular service was resumed promptly, however, and the sixth goal of the afternoon came through Neil MCLEAN, who tapped in after an excellent save by Dunn. MCKAY completed a seven minute hat-trick shortly after, and the eighth and final insult came through sheer bad luck, when a Singer shot took a wild deflection off ELLIS and bounced towards Dunn, who palmed the ball onto the post and in.

Lossie brought about a level of respectability to the scoreline in the 84th minute, when David Hendrys storming run into the box was illegally halted by Kevin Fraser, resulting in a penalty. With Hendry limping off, ELLIS tucked the ball away to the loudest cheer of the afternoon.

There was still time for Locos to give Lossie another scare, but Dunn pulled off another fine save on the line, and the home side had to make do with only 8.

Brutal stuff indeed, but thankfully (I think) it occurred at the end of the season rather than at the beginning. Lossie have time to rebuild and prepare for next season, and at least we should come home from Inverurie with less of a hiding next time out.
