Lossiemouth 4 Wick Academy 5

Lossie were run off the road to Hampden on Saturday by an enterprising Wick Academy, who won the right to play Huntly in the second round after a hard-fought victory at Grant Park.

Both teams started well, with the game flowing quickly from end to end. Lossies opening chances came from good running down the left by Hendry who supplied a number of balls into the box, only for the chances to score to be turned wide. Wick took the lead mid way through the first half after some poor defending by the home team. A throw in for Wick wasn’t cleared sufficiently, and the loose ball was turned in by MACGREGOR.

Only five minutes later and Lossie were on level terms, with a cross by Lee Moir turned home by Darren SHALLIKER. The goal seemed to bring a level of organization to Lossiemouths play, and the Wick goalkeeper had to be quick to save a snap shot from Scott.

Lossie took the lead through a Simon ALLAN goal after more good work on the left by Hendry, with a low shot fired beneath the Wick keeper. The lead was doubled only a few minutes later when Lee MOIR took the Wick defence apart with a mazy run before shooting home from a tight angle.

Almost immediately, from a comfortable position, Lossiemouth were dragged back into a game of football when a shot from a full 35 yards flew past Dunn into the absolute top corner of the net. Things got worse for Lossie when defensive errors allowed Wick an equalizer, a header across the face of goal which should have been cleared.

HALF TIME – Lossiemouth 3 Wick Academy 3

The second half took over from where the first left off, with both teams chasing more goals. The pace of the game was beginning to take its toll, with several players looking tired. Lossiemouth lost Simon Allan to injury early in the half, but his replacement Steven Ellis soon made an impact, placing a perfect pass through the middle to SCOTT who curled the ball past the oncoming keeper from the edge of the six yard box.

The game continued to open up, and became true end-to-end stuff, with precious little football in the midfield. With only 9 minutes left, Wick levelled again, with a far post header from GUNN flying past Dunn.

END OF NORMAL TIME – Lossiemouth 4 Wick Academy 4

Extra time commenced with a clash of heads in the first minute, causing Gary Rollings to go off with a serious looking injury, only to return bandaged up soon after.

Wick were awarded a soft penalty in the 96th minute after a fair challenge in the box. The Lossie players’ protests were enough to distract the taker, who saw his tame shot comfortably saved by Dunn. Before play could resume however, Shaun Scott of Lossiemouth was red-carded for speaking out of turn.

The second half of extra time commenced with what turned out to be the winning goal for Wick, a stretching volley by MCKENZIE securing a second round spot against Huntly, but not before Steven Ellis almost sent the game to penalties with a chip which beat the keeper but unfortunately not the bar.
